Study Shows it Would Cost more than $1,000 for the Average Person to Give Up Facebook

Last year, the #DeleteFacebook movement received substantial media coverage. But, the old saying about no thing as bad publicity seems like it’s taken hold. In fact, some evidence shows Facebook remains just as strong, if not stronger.

A new study clearly demonstrates how difficult it really is to give up the social network. The research shows the average user would only give it up at a cost of more than $1,100 a year.

Ars Technica reports the following about the research conducted by four universities:

The paper started out as two separate studies. Jay Corrigan, an economist at Kenyon College, and his collaborator, Matt Rousu of Susquehanna University, were interested in a session on this topic at an upcoming conference. They discovered that Sean Cash (Tufts University) and Saleem Alhabash (Michigan State University) were doing something very similar.

Since the design of both studies was so complementary, they decided to combine their data and results into a single paper. Cash and Saleem had a larger sample for their part of the study and looked at a longer time period of one year, while Corrigan and Rosein focused on shorter time frames, asking subjects to quit Facebook for one day, three days, or seven days. The studies nonetheless had similar results.

For those who might think the study is purely academic, to ensure the best results, participants did have to give up Facebook and were paid to do so. The study revealed it costs an average of $4.17 per day or $37 per week for someone to quit temporarily. But for a year, results differed depending on demographics, ranging from $1,139 to $2,076.

Obviously, the social site wouldn’t actually pay people to stop using its service but it does clearly show how much people use it and explains why merely 26 percent claimed to #DeleteFacebook last year.
