Instagram is about to Remove its ‘Following’ Tab, a Not so Secretive Tool People used to Spy on their Friends

Instagram is taking away its ‘Following’ tab, which let essentially let people spy on other users, rather than its intended use…

Beginning this week, Instagram will remove one of its more questionable features — the not-too-well-known “Following” tab.

Instagram ‘Following’ Activity Tab being Removed this Week

Instagram will sunset the Following section, which is accessible through the heart tab, perhaps due to the popularity of its “Discover” tab.

For those who aren’t familiar with the Instagram Following tab, it’s a place where users can find new likes and comment from people they follow.

Instagram first introduced the tool back in 2011. Unfortunately, too many people could clandestinely snoop on others. So, they could find out a lot about their friends’ interests.

For instance, the Following tab could reveal all the puppy and kitten profiles their friends followed. But, it would also reveal other interests which might be a bit embarrassing. That means people could easily uncover stuff their friends might not want other to know about. Instagram’s Vishal Shah explains:

“People didn’t always know that their activity is surfacing. So you have a case where it’s not serving the use case you built if for, but it’s also causing people to be surprised when their activity is showing up.”
