Facebook Now has a Dedicated Section for Memories of All Kinds

Facebook Memories is a new section on the social platform where users can reminisce about friendship, see Moments recaps, and discover missed memories…

It appears the original report of Facebook replacing “On This Day” with “Memories” is more robust in scope. Yes, the site did add a new URL (https://www.facebook.com/memories/) and the On This Day address still works. But, now we know why. Facebook announced it’s created a dedicated section for all those lookbacks. It’s aptly named “Facebook Memories” and it’s potentially full of various moments.

New, Dedicated Facebook Memories Section Rolls Out

The new Facebook Memories hub is a one-stop location for all those past moments. Essentially, this is merely an expansion of other offerings, such as “On This Day.” But, it includes four different sections: On This Day, Friends Made On This Day, Recaps of Memories, and Memories You May Have Missed.

This represents Facebook’s ongoing battle against what it internally calls “context collapse” or a decline in “original content broadcasting.” The former is a phenomenon of users spending more time on the platform but sharing less. However, metrics have worsened. The site actually lost users in the U.S. and Canada for the first time. So, it’s been pushing memories collages to nudge users into sharing more.

The company also introduced post background colors to prod users to sharing more original content. It’s even used a CTA to catch users’ attention. For about the past year, it’s been curating monthly and seasonal memories collections. (These include, but aren’t limited to: May MomentsSpring MemoriesJuneJuly, and AugustSummer Memories, as well as September and October memory collections. Other recent curations are the Facebook February Moments video and Facebook Winter Memories.)

Here’s what users can potentially find on the page, quoted directly from the social network:

  • On This Day: The content that you know and love will still be available within this section, showing your past posts and major life events from this date.
  • Friends Made On This Day: This section will include a list of friends you made on this date in the past, including special videos or collages that celebrate your friendversaries.
  • Recaps of Memories: This section will feature seasonal or monthly recaps of memories that have been bundled into a message or short video.
  • Memories You May Have Missed: If you haven’t checked your memories lately, this section will show you the posts that you might have missed from the past week.
