Reddit now explicitly prohibits user from impersonating other people or entities on its website but makes an exception for satire…
The so-called “front page of the internet” Reddit, has updated its site policies to disallow impersonating individuals or entities. In particular, proscribing users from impersonations that are misleading or deceptive in nature.
Reddit Bans Impersonating People and Entities on its Platform
Reddit has banned the impersonating of people and brands, not only to prohibit deepfakes, but to also prevent other kinds of behavior which might negatively impact others.
However, the new policies do allow users to use impersonation in a manner of parody or satire. (Reddit itself discloses impersonation is its second-lowest class of policy violations, comprising just 2.3 percent of complaints in 2018.)
Here’s the update to Reddit’s policies:
“Do not impersonate an individual or entity in a misleading or deceptive manner.
Reddit does not allow content that impersonates individuals or entities in a misleading or deceptive manner. This not only includes using a Reddit account to impersonate someone, but also encompasses things such as domains that mimic others, as well as deepfakes or other manipulated content presented to mislead, or falsely attributed to an individual or entity. While we permit satire and parody, we will always take into account the context of any particular content.”
