Over the previous twenty-four hours, Facebook, along with its subsidiary services, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp, suffered a massive outage.

Telegram Gains 3 Million Users During Massive Facebook Outage

The worldwide connectivity issues lead people to take to alternative social networks, including Twitter, where they commiserated.  

Founder and CEO Pavel Durov on his personal Telegram channel announced the new sign-ups early this morning. (The last number posted of user was back in March 2018, totaling 200 million active accounts.)

Telegram works much like WhatsApp, as a free encrypted messaging service. However, it’s funded by user donations rather than targeted advertising. Telegram puts big emphasis on its commitment to protecting users’ privacy, bolstered by end-to-end encryption.
