Mountain View, California—Google Webmaster Tools is now more robust, showing expanded link data, including site inbound links. Formerly, users saw backlinks in alphabetical order; as of last week, new changes went into effect, allowing users to sort data.
The long sought change comes after the search engine received a lot of requests for such features in its community forums, “Based on feedback from the webmaster community, we’re improving how we select these backlinks to give sites a fuller picture of their backlink profile. The most significant improvement you’ll see is that most of the links are now sampled uniformly from the full spectrum of backlinks rather than alphabetically,” explained Yinnon Haviv, Software Engineer, Webmaster Tools Team in a blog post published on September 12th.
Google Webmaster Tools Now More Diverse
The interface serves up to 100,000 links, but that data hasn’t been very useful as sorting was not an option. Now, users will see example links from top-level domains (TLDs) and from other domains. When users download their data, it will have a more diverse cross-section. Backlinks will be easier to find, making it less complicated to find “low-quality/spammy” inbound links.
Though the lexicographical order is no longer dominant inside Webmaster Tools, users might still have to dedicate a lot of time to finding bad links as the service supports so many.
Other Recent Changes
During the past several months, Google has introduced new ranking factors. It’s also made some improvements to its social network, giving the Google+ dashboard a makeover. In July, it re-released Panda, following the refresh with a stern warning on link schemes.
Google has also been testing new search features, which started to go live in August. The search engine still holds an impressive lead over its competition, with 67 percent of all queries made through its search portal, though it recently lost out to Yahoo sites in traffic.
