Trending hashtags are distinctly related to Twitter, but it appears the microblog’s cofounder, Jack Dorsey, will get more from his favorite mobile app. Instagram users will be able to explore which hashtags are trending in real-time and be able to check-out the profiles of other users tagging their posts.
Also similar to the Twittersphere is follow suggestions, which provides users with a list of accounts containing content they most often search and view. When a user follows someone else, a list will appear with like account suggestions. This will encourage more users to interact, thereby creating more time-on-site metrics, something that marketers will surely embrace and pay to run ads on the platform.
Instagram Trending Hashtags a Smart Move
In the recent past, Facebook, which acquired the photo and video sharing app, has steadily been introducing Twitter-like features to improve its already sizable social media market share. With such changes to Instagram, the largest social network might not have to keep implementing similar user features.
Facebook purchased the mobile application in April 2012 for a reported $1 billion in stock and cash. Throughout the next year, Instagram increased its number of users by 23 percent, while Facebook only recorded an increase of 3 percent. The app is available in 25 languages and has approximately 200 million active users worldwide.
