Copywriter to the Rescue: When It’s Time

copywriterCopywriter? Why would anyone need copywriters? After all, it’s easy to click on over to our blog and take-in a few pointers. Armed with insider knowledge about how professionals go about their copywriting services, it doesn’t seem practical to actually hire copywriters.

But there’s certainly more to copywriting than knowing the ins-and-outs. Even if there are explicit instructions on how to create direct response ads or how to craft an interesting business newsletter, it doesn’t necessarily mean anyone can do it.

There are other considerations. Time, inspiration, style, formatting and research. These are things a freelance copywriter does regularly. Being privy to a few tricks of the trade doesn’t make a polished writer.

What Makes a Copywriter

Anyone who’s been in the business of writing, be it a web copywriter, journalist, copy editor, technical writer or other facet knows there’s more to being a copy writer than just stringing coherent sentences together.

…although it may be true that a picture is worth a thousand words, it takes only seven words to express that thought. Try doing it with a picture—let alone a sales mechanism. —Forbes

It’s about using words that compel action, connect on a personal level and spell out the intent without going over the top.

What copy writers do is create content that is useful to consumers. And that’s the entire purpose behind the Internet. Web copywriting plays to the very foundation of the web–diseminating information.

Why Copywriting Services are a Necessity

Beside the fact that writing takes a lot of time, there are other reasons it’s best to hire a copywriter. Here are the most common scenarios for why business’ need to contract the skill sets of freelance copywriters:

  1. You don’t have the gift. Like ballet dancing, doing long division without a calculator, or painting a masterpiece, copywriting takes a certain level of talent. And no matter the coaching you can extract from how-to tutorials, without some raw talent, the words won’t flow.
  2. You don’t have the inspiration. This is often the biggest obstacle to writing copy. Knowing the subject material is great but worth little if it can’t be put into words. It’s not natural for many people to write for long periods of time.
  3. You don’t have the expertise. Experience is perhaps the greatest teacher. And someone who’s been there before more than once will have that necessary experience. It takes time and effort to learn what works and what doesn’t.
  4. You can’t see the forest for the trees. Minutiae is exhausting to readers. They want the information in a way that’s understandable and digestible. While you may write really detailed stuff, it might be too dense. A copywriter knows how to balance details with general concepts.
  5. You aren’t prepared. Time is of the essence. Or you can’t accommodate the task. Business owners need to attend to so many things everyday. And turning-out a few paragraphs isn’t usually the highest priority. If you do, you’re killing your credibility. A good copywriter knows tone, grammar and how to sound credible.
