Essential SEO Blog Elements for Small Business

Learn about the most essential SEO blog elements to increase organic search rank, improve user experience, and be naturally social media shareable

The most essential SEO blog elements for small business aren’t technical or difficult to understand but do require consistency for the best results. While it’s quite easy to commit common small business search engine optimization mistakes, when it comes to blogging, it’s a lot less complicated.

If you’re already blogging for your small business, you probably know the importance of balancing search optimization and delivering informative, interesting content. Although Google and Bing are becoming more semantic and bridging the gap between software and the human brain, there’s a long way to go. In other words, it’s a monumental goal to program software to think like a person. Currently, this disparity requires a bit of savvy jiu jitsu to SEO a blog while still publishing great content.

Providing fresh, relevant content that’s also optimized for search engines is necessary to market a brand in today’s digital world. It’s so important because statistics clearly demonstrate the power of blogging. Companies that ‪‎blog‬ have 97 percent more inbound ‎links — something which greatly improves organic rank. Blogging is just as effective when it comes to increasing sales. Studies reveal 61 percent of U.S. ‪‎online‬ consumers have made a purchase based on recommendations from a blog. And 81 percent of U.S. online ‎consumers‬ trust information and advice from blogs.

Search engine optimization is incredibly important for marketers. When you optimize your web pages — including your blog posts — you’re making your website more visible to people who are looking for keywords associated with your brand, product, or service via search engines like Google. But it can be a pretty tricky tactic to master with Google’s copious algorithm updates. – (Source)

For SEO, blogging does the same. Google’s‬ ‪‎Hummingbird‬, ‪Panda‬, ‪Penguin‬, and ‪RankBrain‬ share one key component — quality ‪content‬. If a ‪‎website‬ publishes low quality content across its static menu pages or on its ‪‎blog‬, it will harm the property’s rank ability. As you can plainly see, there’s a need to please consumers while still using certain techniques for optimization. Here are the most essential SEO blog elements for small business:

  1. Use the right keywords. Keywords are necessary because these help search engines to identify relevant query matches. So, you need to use the right keywords, not as many as you can find. Long tail key phrases are the most effective because these target specifics. Use Google Keyword Planner to find which keywords are most relevant, then create blog content including variations to learn which work best.
  2. Write content naturally. Years ago, it was necessary to create content almost exclusively for search engines but today, the focus is on consumers. Natural, holistic content created for consumer consumption is key to growing an audience. Optimization should always be second because your business is not selling to search engines.
  3. Create search-friendly URLs. Each blog entry should include the right keywords in its URL. Again, a long tail key phrase in the blog entry’s web address will be far more effective than a naturally written title. Remember, this will exist for a long time, so it’s best practice to place a targeted key phrase in the URL of each blog post.
  4. Be sure to optimize all images. There’s a reason fields for an image’s title and “ALT text” are provided in content management systems. It’s to provide search engines with information about what the image is because search engines do not have eyes. Here again, use a long tail key phrase to optimize an image. You can also include a description of the image but for optimization, a key phrase is best.
  5. Always include one outbound link. One SEO blog element which too many small businesses ignore is including at least one outbound link in each article. People usually don’t include outbound links because they object to sending visitors away from their websites. This  shortsightedness is harmful because it’s called “the web” for a good reason — websites need to link to others for relevancy.
  6. Interlink with previously published posts. Another super important optimization element is linking to previously published posts. Two or three is a good rule of thumb, but more is fine. Keep the reader in mind, though, because an article with a plethora of links won’t look or feel natural. Of course, always link back to similar or related content.

In addition, ensure each blog entry is social media friendly. Since social media marketing is a necessary part of building and expanding a brand, your blog content needs real appeal. Doing so will cause it to get more shares and likes.
