Amazon has greatly expanded its entertainment catalog with the addition of more than 70,000 podcasts to its app, the web, and Echo devices…
Amazon has added tens of thousands of podcasts to its Music platform. Of course, there will be ads. (Whether or not hosts will use the live-read format and/or if paid subscribers will hear them isn’t yet known.) This obviously pits Amazon Music squarely against other popular streaming services. It also helps Amazon to stand out, given that Apple Music and Apple Podcasts are separate platforms.
Amazon Music Podcasts Debut
Amazon’s integration of podcasts is a smart move, given the huge popularity of the format. Competitor Spotify has already made the move, betting big on podcasts with a sizable investment. Meanwhile, Google Podcasts also remain separate from YouTube Music, the successor to Google Play Music. Rival Pandora added podcasts in December of 2018, complete with personalized recommendations.
Moreover, Audible, the popular online bookstore recently announced its newest and least expensive subscription plan. It offers customers access to exclusive podcasts. However, those shows aren’t part of the new Amazon Music expansion. Meaning, it would require a separate subscription. Regardless, this demonstrates the power of podcasts and just how valuable they are to consumers.
