AMC theaters to require face masks upon reopening

This Theater Chain will Require Face Masks after CEO Said They were Optional

AMC Theaters has reversed its earlier decision about optional face masks for guests, and now says the coverings will be mandatory…

Just this past Thursday, AMC Theaters CEO Adam Aron said that the largest movie chain in the world would not require guests to wear facial masks. But that’s quickly changed and the company will, in-fact, make guest face coverings mandatory when its theaters begin reopening.

AMC Theaters to Require Face Masks upon Reopening

AMC plans to reopen 450 of its US locations out of 600 on July 15th. It will do this with limited capacity, after shutting down all its theaters in mid-March. Since that time, the company posted a whopping $2.2 billion net loss in the first quarter of the year.

Over the past three months, the chain has effectively generated little to no revenue. The company says if it can’t resume near-normal operations by July, it has real concern about its ability to exist, even in the near future. CEO Adam Aron recently wrote in a press release:

“This announcement prompted an intense and immediate outcry from our customers, and it is clear from this response that we did not go far enough on the usage of masks. Accordingly, and with the full support of our scientific advisors, we are reversing course and are changing our guest mask policy. As we reopen theatres, we now will require that all AMC guests nationwide wear masks as they enter and enjoy movies at our theatres.”
