This development is a manifestation of an ongoing trend. More than one billion Android devices ship each year, company to about 200 million Windows-powered PCs. However, this represents the first time any entity claims Android outperforms Windows for online access.

“This is a milestone in technology history and the end of an era. It marks the end of Microsoft’s leadership worldwide of the OS market which it has held since the 1980s. It also represents a major breakthrough for Android which held just 2.4 percent of global internet usage share only five years ago,” Aodhan Cullen, CEO, StatCounter said.

Back in July 2014, mobile web browsing first exceeded PCs. At the time, a full 60 percent of consumers made buying decisions via a mobile device. This follows a long-established trend of the mobile internet overtaking desktop. This easily explains Google’s mobile-first index initiative, which remains months away from rolling out.

Tablets and smartphones, in particular, have largely replaced desktop machines for everyday tasks, especially in developed markets with fast and robust 4G connections. As a result, Android dominates the mobile market, with iOS also taking away from desktop computers.

StatCounter bases its figures on data gathered from web trackers installed on 2.5 million websites. The company likewise reports the Google Chrome browser the most popular among users over Internet Explorer and other Microsoft browser products. Google Chrome actually benefits from Microsoft browser abandonment and continues to heavily dominate market share.
