Even though app fatigue is a real thing, that doesn’t mean there’s no demand. (For instance, fewer the .01 percent of all mobile apps will return a positive ROI, achieving financial success. Only 1 in 10,000 apps developed break-even or are profitable. Plus, the average consumer spends 70 to 80 percent of their digital time in their three most-frequently used apps, practically ignoring all others installed.)

So, it’s surprising to see just how much money mobile applications can earn collectively. And, according to a recent report by Apple, its digital store supported $519 billion in sales last year.

The findings reveal $45 billion for in-app advertising. Meanwhile, digital good and services accounted for as much as $61 billion. Additionally, physical goods and services racked up $413 billion. The latter is even better news for merchants, as Apple takes a commission of 15 to 30 percent — but it’s not applicable to advertising or physical goods.Apple posted a press release on its newsroom, which read, in-part:

“Apple today announced the App Store ecosystem supported $519 billion in billings and sales globally in 2019 alone. The new study, conducted by independent economists at Analysis Group, found that the highest value categories were mobile commerce (m-commerce) apps, digital goods and services apps, and in-app advertising. The results encapsulate the full sweep of the dynamic, competitive, and flourishing app economy, which has unleashed a torrent of innovation across 175 countries and revolutionized the way the world learns, works, and connects.”
