Apple rolls out its digital CarKey on iOS, so it’s now possible to lock and unlock compatible vehicles with an iPhone or Apple Watch…

With the release of watchOS 6.2.8 and iOS 13.6 comes Apple’s digital CarKey feature. Now, anyone who has bought or leased a BMW since the beginning of the month can now lock and unlock their vehicle’s doors, simply by tapping their devices against the exterior door handle.

Apple’s iOS Digital CarKey Arrives

Apple first announced the option back at last month’s WWDC event. CarKey gives certain users the ability to remotely lock, unlock, and even start select vehicles. BMW partnered with Apple to bring the feature to their customers and it works with any Series 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, X5, X6, X7, X5M, X6M or Z4. That is, if the vehicle was manufactured after the 1st of July of 2020.

CarKey works through Apple Wallet. It allows people to create and share temporary keys with as many as five others via iMessage. The vehicle owner can even set up individual profiles. This provides a necessary layer of security and safety, helping to prevent accidents.

To use CarKey, just tap an iPhone against the car door, place the device on the central Qi charger, then press the ignition button. And, if a phone’s battery is nearly drained or even dead, it will still work. This, because it sports a small power reserve that lasts for up to five hours. If a phone or watch is lost or stolen, it’s possible to disable the virtual keys through the iCloud platform.
