Netflix confirms it will offer a less expensive, mobile-only subscription for streamers in India, this year, after extensive testing…
Netflix CEO Reed Hastings sent a letter to shareholders which confirms the streaming service will roll out a cheaper, mobile-only subscription plan in India this year.
Cheaper Mobile-Only Netflix Subscription for 2019 in India Confirmed
The news follows the company’s March affirmation of testing a $3.50 plan for mobile subscribers in India. Hastings writes:
“After several months of testing, we’ve decided to roll out a lower-priced mobile-screen plan in India to complement our existing plans. We believe this plan, which will launch in Q3, will be an effective way to introduce a larger number of people in India to Netflix and to further expand our business in a market where Pay-TV ARPU is low (below $5). We will continue to learn more after the launch of this plan.”
At present, the least expensive Netflix plan in India runs Rs. 450 or $6.54. That plan gives customers access to all of the streaming service’s content in SD on one screen. However, competitors Hostars and Amazon Prime cost less, at Rs 999 or $14.50 per year.
