During the third quarter of 2020, Chrome OS grew so much across the globe, sales numbers became international news. This, due to the immense shift toward virtual learning and work-from-home or WFH policies adopted by so many businesses. Now, the latest figures compiled by Strategy Analytics reveals Chrome OS has significantly overtaken MacOS to hit #2 in the global Notebook PC market share.
Chromebooks Overtake Mac OS in Laptop Sales during Q4 2020
International Notebook PC sales were up across the board from the previous year. But this time, Chrome OS took second place, pushing MacOS down to third, with both operating systems still lagging well behind Windows. (Windows has long dominated with approximately 76+% of all market share.) However, during Q4 2020, there were approximately 11.4 million shipments of Chrome OS, representing a year-over-year growth of 86% and 133% of quarterly growth year-over-year.
Those sales outpaced MacOS, which sold 6.3 million during Q4 2020, an increase of 26% year-over-year, and 58% in quarterly growth year-over-year. Meanwhile, Windows held the top spot with 51.1 million, representing 26% in annual growth and an impressive rise of 43% in quarterly growth, year-over-year. By comparison, all other operating systems accounted for 0.9 million shipments, with an annual growth of 8%, year-over-year.
