Disney Gains Full Control over Hulu with New Comcast Deal

Disney gains full control over Hulu, through a new deal with Comcast, leaving NBCUniversal content on the platform at least until 2024…

Last month, AT&T sold its shares of Hulu. That move left Disney and Comcast as the streaming service’s only owners. Now, Comcast has relinquished its control, giving Disney the reins. (Disney just acquired Fox’s 30 percent stake back in 2017.)

Disney now has total control over Hulu, as part of a put/call arrangement with Comcast. In exchange, Comcast can now mandate Disney purchase NBCUniversal’s 33 percent ownership in Hulu as early as 2024.

If this happens, Disney can then require NBCUniversal to sell its interest in Hulu for fair market value in five years. Disney has guaranteed a minimum sale price of $27.5 billion for the future acquisition.

Although Disney retains full operational control, the agreement stipulates Comcast’s ownership in Hulu will not drop below 21 percent.

Additionally, Comcast agrees to extend its licensing of NBCUniversal content on Hulu until 2024. Also, the company can continue to distribute Hulu on its Xfinity X1 platform. After a three-year period, NBCUniversal can terminate most of its content license agreements.
