Fake Facebook profiles, Groups, and Pages are being aggressively targeted by the social platform. In a blog post today, Nathaniel Gleicher, Head of Cybersecurity Policy, wrote the company is doing more to rid the site of these imposters.

Facebook Aggressively Removing Fake Pages, Groups, and Accounts

Gleicher just announced the company recently removed over 10,000 fake accounts, Pages, and Groups from Mexico and throughout Latin America. The cybersecurity chief said the social network took this action because the accounts “violated our Community Standards.” And further explained, “The content we’ve found broke our policies on coordinated harm and inauthentic behavior, as well as attacks based on race, gender or sexual orientation.”

Gleicher also discloses the company removed 837 spam pieces, 2.5 million pieces of hate speech, and “…disabled 583 million fake accounts globally in the first quarter of 2018.” For the later, Gleicher states the fake accounts were identified and taken down before anyone reported them.

Facebook explains it is using machine learning, combined with artificial intelligence and computer vision, to proactively detect “bad actors.”

The company likewise reaffirms its commitment to working with third-party fact checkers and taking other measures to combat fake news. Additionally, the platform is working to make advertising more transparent.
