Facebook Issues an Apology for Its Autocomplete Child Abuse Video Suggestions

Recently discovered Facebook autocomplete child abuse video suggestions came to light and the social network is now apologizing…

Facebook is apologizing for a colossal blunder. On Thursday night, Twitter user @BennettJonah took horrified notice of a disconcerting search autocomplete suggestion. When typing “video of…” the social network automatically suggested different perverse behaviors. These targeted underage girls, as well as adult or pornographic content.

Since the discovery, Facebook did act quickly to correct the problem. In a statement to The Guardian, Facebook said, “As soon as we became aware of these offensive predictions we removed them. Facebook search predictions are representative of what people may be searching for on Facebook and are not necessarily reflective of actual content on the platform.”

This is particularly odd given the fact that Facebook completely prohibits nudity and/or sexually explicit content on all its platforms. (Facebook owns Instagram and WhatsApp.)

This isn’t the only instance the social network has been caught-up in scandal-inducing algorithm suggestions. In fact, last September, the company enabled advertisers to seek out such despicable terms as “jew hater” or “Hitler did nothing wrong.”
