In a new benchmark, Facebook Messenger now has 1.2 billion monthly active users, up from its previous milestone of 1 billion MAUs in July of last year…
Facebook Messenger now claims 1.2 billion monthly active users, a considerable jump of 200 million MAUs in July 2016. Normally, adding a fifth of a billion users decreases engagement, but the app experienced an increase. “…we increased engagement massively in terms of number of messages sent per active user. We had double-digit growth percentage-wise,” David Marcus, head of Messenger told TechCrunch.
Facebook Messenger Reaches 1.2 Billion Monthly Active Users, over 1 Billion in July
Facebook turned the messaging feature into a standalone native app in 2014, adding such options as games, video calling, stickers, reaction emojis, live location sharing, as well as one-to-one payments and group payments.
In a short post, the company thanked its users. “We now have over 1.2 billion people actively using Messenger every month. And I keep on hearing powerful stories about how our product is becoming a more important part of your daily lives. So from all of us here at Messenger, a heartfelt thank you to all of you for giving us a chance to build something good and more meaningful for you.”
Worldwide downloads of Messenger on iOS and Android increased 5.66 percent from 145.3 million in Q1 2016 to 153.5 million in Q1 2017, according to Sensor Tower. The company states Messenger handles 1 billion monthly messages and 400 million use the video calling feature.
The number of Messenger MAUs are twice the size of Facebook-owned Instagram, which has 600 million. However, this figure is at parity with another Facebook-owned property, WhatsApp, which also has 1.2 billion monthly active users. Between Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp, that’s a total of approximately 4.7 billion MUAs.
