Say goodbye to those Facebook temporary reactions because the social network states it will no longer offer them going forward…
Facebook Reactions first debuted in 2015. These now familiar buttons include Like, Love, Haha, Wow, Sad, and Angry. Occasionally, the company changed its lineup to include temporary icons, like a flower for Mother’s Day (see below). But now, that practice has come to an end.
Facebook Temporary Reactions Killed Off
Facebook tested various ways to expand on its interaction animations. And, it settled on six. However, the company would periodically make specific reactions available to users. (Mother’s Day 2016 was the first and it also appeared in 2017.) It quickly became popular. So, the company expanded the icons to more markets.
In fact, about a year later, Facebook prioritized Reactions over Likes in its algorithmic rankings. The company stated it made the move since it accounts for a greater level of engagement.
This year and going forward, the social site won’t serve these up any more. Company spokeswoman Lisa Stratton says the platform is “no longer doing custom reactions for major holidays or moments in culture.”
Instead, Facebook will give its users other ways to celebrate special occasions, such as profile frames, specialized text posts, unique backgrounds and Messenger AR filters.
