Spotify users can’t cast music or podcasts to Google Assistant smart displays or speakers, at least those who don’t subscribe to premium plans…
Spotify has long been a very popular streaming service. One of its best perks was the ability to cast content from free accounts to any Google Assistant-powered smart speakers or displays. However, that option has quietly been removed and has instead been switched over to a privilege for paying customers. Now, it’s necessary to subscribe to Spotify’s premium services.
Free Spotify Accounts can No Longer Cast Audio to Google Assistant Speakers or Displays
When Spotify users attempt to cast audio from their mobile devices over to any Google Assistant-supported smart speaker or display, a revised casting page reveals the need for a Premium account. Currently, there’s no mention on Spotify’s own Support Pages but it’s nevertheless the new state of affairs for the streaming service. (What it doesn’t tell listeners is the privilege will cost $9.99 per month for the single Premium service or $14.999 for the Family plan.)
Spotify has yet to publicly comment on the situation but the move is probably in the company’s best financial interest to nudge listeners away from the free plan over to a paid subscription.
