Google is Testing a New YouTube Lite Ad-Free Subscription Pilot Program

Yep, YouTube is Experimenting with an Ad-Free Version but Not at the Premium Price

YouTube is currently running a test program in parts of Europe that offers an ad-free experience called YouTube Lite for €6.99 per month…

YouTube is by far the largest video hosting site on the internet. And, parent company Google has leveraged its huge audience to produce a very healthy ad-revenue stream. In fact, ad-money is the single biggest source of the search giant’s income.

But, not everyone is fond or even tolerant of its ubiquitous advertising. So, they fork over about $10 per month to enjoy an ad-free experience. However, not everyone who would like the same ad-free experience is willing to pay that much. In order to gain more subscribers, Google is experimenting with a less expensive alternative.

The cheaper version, YouTube Lite, costs just €6.99 per month or about $9.71 USD. It’s available in Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden. Additionally, it works across main web app, iOS, Android, smart televisions, game consoles, as well as YouTube Kids. Although, it’s not that much cheaper, costing about 60% to 90% of the price of YouTube Premium, which offers ad-free listening, background playback, or offline downloads. A spokesperson for YouTube tells The Verge the following:

“In Nordics and Benelux (except for Iceland), we’re testing a new offering to give users even more choice: Premium Lite costs €6.99/month (or local equivalent per month) and it includes ad-free videos on YouTube.”
