The Google Maps Android app now sports real-time traffic information, a Places tab, Driving tab and Transit tab for more robust mobile user experience…
The latest iteration of the Google Maps Android app includes new user features. Now, swiping up from the bottom of the screen produces a Places tab, Driving tab and Transit tab. These tools come in addition to Google adding parking information for twenty-five cities, at the end of January.
Google Maps Android App Now includes Real-Time Traffic, Places, Bus Schedules and More
“Under the places tab, you’ll see curated lists of places to eat and drink like ‘best dinners,’ ‘cheap eats’ or ‘business dining,’ around you or in any location you choose. In one tap you can also search for other everyday spots like ATMs, pharmacies, gas stations and grocery stores. Peek at images of the area or read a short description of the neighborhood to get the lay of the land,” Marcus Lowe, Product Manager writes.
The Driving tab displays real-time traffic conditions, along with ETAs (for users who have saved their home and work addressed saved). The Traffic tab provides bus and train recommendations, which is also based on users’ saved home and work addresses. Alternatives are accessible by swiping down to discover nearby public transit stations, as well as schedules.
In related news, the upcoming Android Chrome 57 will support progressive web apps, which Google enthusiastically backs. Also, the search giant’s mobile interstitial ad penalty is hitting sites with language and country selector pop ups.
