Google Maps has evolved from a simple navigation platform to a nearly outright Yelp competitor and it’s now testing a new “For You” section…
Everyone has traveled to or through a strange town, not knowing where to find the best places to eat and/or explore.
Sure, there’s usually top 10 lists of the most popular things to do on the internet. But, discovering where and what locals truly love is a lot more challenging. Google Maps is about to make finding those spots a whole lot simpler.
Google Maps Tests New ‘For You’ Section from Local Guides’ Favorite Spots Contributions
Google already has an established program called Local Guides. The company is about to leverage that intimate knowledge to provide travelers with the spots locals most frequent and like. It’s doing so through a test with a new section called “For You” in Google Maps. This way, visitors can get insiders’ perspectives as to where to go and what to do.
Google is rolling out the experiment in mine cities across the globe: London, New York, San Francisco, Tokyo, Sao Paulo, Bangkok, Delhi, Osaka, and Mexico City.
It’s not known how Google will choose individual Local Guides or what metrics it uses to determine who is eligible. But, if the test proves successful, that will likely change.
