The Google Play Movies mobile application joins an elite club of programs downloaded more than 5 billion times from the Play Store…
When most people think about mobile streaming apps, they probably first think about YouTube, Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, as well as others, like Sling. But, there’s one that turns out is hugely popular but doesn’t seem to have the same recognition — Google Play Movies. Although, judging by its numbers, it is a true competitor.
Google Play Movies App Reaches 5 Billion Downloads from the Play Store
Google Play Movies and TV differs from some other streaming services. For instance, unlike Netflix, Hulu, and Roku, there are no free, ad-supported titles. Instead, it’s a platform where individuals can rent or buy films and television series and episodes. What’s more, it’s been automatically upgrading some purchases from SD and HD to 4K, at no charge.
A big part of the reason for so many installs is the fact that it comes pre-installed on the majority of Android smartphones. But, downloads have ballooned since mid-May, according to app-tracker AppBrain. Obviously, this can be mostly attributed to the COVID-19 quarantines across the globe. But, this doesn’t necessarily mean that people are buying content. Undoubtedly, some are just checking out the platform as a comparison to other media streaming services.
