Google says it will provide more prominence to original reporting of news, which could bolster local sources over bigger outlets…
Google has updated its search signals to give more priority to original reporting. Richard Gingras, Vice President of News, published a blog post, announcing the change.
Google Search to Prioritize Original Reporting
The reason for the update to the algorithms is simple. The original reporting agency might be a small one. So, subsequent reports by larger organizations generally get higher ranking in search results.
Google not only tweaked its technology, the company also updated its guidelines for its 10,000 search quality raters. Basically, new directives tell those human search quality raters to give more favor to original sources.
Gingras writes the following:
“While we typically show the latest and most comprehensive version of a story in news results, we’ve made changes to our products globally to highlight articles that we identify as significant original reporting. Such articles may stay in a highly visible position longer. This prominence allows users to view the original reporting while also looking at more recent articles alongside it.”
