Google Says it’s Shutting Down YouTube Go in August of this Year

YouTube Go will be shuttered come August 2022, Google recently announced, saying it’s made key improvements to its flagship streaming app…

YouTube Go will come to a full and complete stop in August of this year. Parent company Google made the announcement on its website, stating it plans to sunset the lightweight mobile app this summer. The search giant states it is doing so because it’s made enough improvements on the flagship YouTube app to make the stripped-down version unnecessary.

Google will Discontinue YouTube Go in August 2022

Google first introduced YouTube Go about six years ago, back in 2016. At the time, the alternate version was released for markets suffering from spotty connections, viewers with higher data prices, as well as owners of low-end devices. YouTube Go also supported offline downloads at various quality levels, took up little space to install and run, plus the ability to locally share videos without using data.

Google added it is also developing more features to help reduce mobile data usage for viewers watching on limited data plans. However, the company didn’t disclose when the coming improvements would be made available.

“Today, we are announcing that YouTube Go will be sunsetted beginning in August. To access YouTube, we recommend that YouTube Go users install the main YouTube app or visit in their browsers. In comparison with YouTube Go, the main YouTube app provides a better overall user experience as well as offers features that aren’t available on YouTube Go that many have asked for – such as the ability to comment, post, create content, and use dark theme.”
