Instagram will Block Hashtags Related to Anti-Vaccination Misinformation

Instagram has announced it will start hiding search results for hashtags which return false vaccine information…

Facebook subsidiary social site, Instagram, has announced it’s blocking hashtags related to misinformation about vaccines.

Instagram Blocking Anti-Vaccination Misinformation Hashtags

The network revealed it is proactively hiding search results tied to hashtags which dissuade people from getting vaccinated.

Karina Newton, Instagram’s global head of public policy, said at a press event in San Francisco:

“If the hashtag was #vaccines1234, if it contained a high proportion of known vaccine misinformation, we would block that hashtag entirely.”

The phrase, “known vaccine misinformation,” refers to misinformation about vaccines that has been verified as untrue by the World Health Organization, the Centers for Disease Control, and similar organizations.

Additionally, Instagram will start displaying pop-up messages when users search for information about vaccines on its site. Those messages will contain links to high-quality materials about the subject.

The move comes months after Pinterest did the same. In an effort to curb the spread of misinformation, Pinterest simply removed the subject of vaccinations from its search results.

So, if someone performed a search with certain keywords related to anti-vaccination material, the platform won’t return those results.
