Instagram Keyword Search Support Debuts

Instagram Now Allows Users to Search by Keyword, No Hashtag Needed

Instagram now supports keyword searches, so users don’t have to rely on hashtags to find what they’re interested in finding on the platform…

The ability to search on Instagram is now more robust. The Facebook subsidiary has upgraded its search abilities to include looking by keyword, without requiring a hashtag to find a topic. The feature is already live in six English-speaking countries, including the UK, US, Ireland, and Canada. Prior to the change, if someone wanted to find “quick dinner recipes” they’d have to rely on #quickdinnerrecipes. Now, Instagram will let people simply search “quick dinner recipes.”

However, the new keyword search support isn’t without its flaws. For example, searching “quick dinner recipes” might bring up posts that have little to do with the query, albeit similar. But, at this time, the keyword search capabilities are quite limited. Meaning, that complex search terms aren’t supported right now. Currently, it seems limited to generic search queries and not specifics. (Taboo topics also don’t seem to work, so searching for “vaccines” or conspiracy theories won’t return any results.)

Even still, it’s a huge step for a company that doesn’t have a track record of allowing broader — or targeted searches. A spokesperson explains, “The search is limited to general interest topics and keywords that are within Instagram’s community guidelines.”
