Instagram online status indicators are now appearing on the Facebook subsidiary platform, to tell all followers who’s available to chat…
It’s only been a matter of time. Now, Instagram is borrowing a page from a very familiar playbook. It just introduced online status indicators. Those little green dots which tell anyone that’s connected who’s online at the moment.
Instagram Online Status Indicators go Live
“When your friends are active on Instagram, you’ll see a green dot next to their profile picture in various spaces within the app, including the Direct inbox and your friend list when you share a post from feed. You will only see status for friends who follow you or people who you have talked to in Direct. You can easily hide your own status and turn off the ability to see when your friends are active in your settings.”
Instagram will also show activity messages. For instance, “Active x minutes ago,” and “Typing.” This is becoming more mainstream among social media sites and as the quote above points out, users can easily disable it.
The new Instagram online status indicators are of course, to prompt users into interacting. Doing so makes it more likely they’ll share more original content. Which is obviously the goal given it’s an ad-supported service.
