Facebook brought in SparkAR months ago to start a limited experiment with custom filters on Instagram and now it’s open to the public…
Facebook made a slew of announcements at its last F8 conference. One piece of information which largely flew under the radar was a change in effects and filters.
Instagram SparkAR Filters Opens Up to All Users
Previously, the only Instagram camera effects available were proprietary. Meaning, they’re all developed in-house. But, parent company Facebook is opened up its Spark AR Studio tool to Instagram. The tool remained in closed beta since its addition.
Now, Instagram has released it to the wild, where anyone can access and use it.
To try it out, download the Spark AR Studio for free on Mac OS or Windows. Then, simply scroll to the end of the filter tray in the Stories section. Next, find and click on “Browse More Effects.” Play around with it, using the easy drag-and-drop functionality and share it when ready.
Facebook follows rival Snapchat, which opened access to its Lens Studio early last year. Thereafter, it rolled out Lens Explorer for creating user-made AR lenses.
As with any other new feature, there’s no guarantee Instagram will make this a permanent addition or just a temporary trial run.
