Instagram is in the process of testing concealing its like count, to compel users to put their focus on content, rather than numbers…

Software engineer Jane Manchun Wong has done it yet again. Quite familiar to the social media world, Wong recently discovered Instagram is testing hiding like counts from users.

Wong found the code in the Android app for Instagram. She shared her find via Twitter, which clearly shows the like count removed. It’s replaced by “View Likes,” instead.

Clicking on the “View Likes” link shows the total number of likes on a post, along with the people who interacted. Mutual followers can see certain information but cannot view total like counts.

Instagram confirmed its test to TechCrunch, saying it’s working on the change internally but it’s not ready to roll out widely.

Whether Instagram adopts the change remains to be seen. But, it could help to make the platform feel more organic rather than a contest between users.
