Microsoft Word’s AI Editing Tool Now Rewrites Whole Sentences

Microsoft has improved its Word AI editing tool, Rewrite Suggestions, to reconstruct whole sentences for 365 subscribers…

Back in 2019 at the Microsoft Build conference, the software giant unveiled Rewrite Suggestions, an AI-powered editing tool for Word. Now, the company has improved the feature in a big way. With the latest update, it can actually offer total reconstruction of whole sentences.

Microsoft Rewrite Suggestions AI Editing Tool can Now Correct Entire Sentences

Initially, the tool mere provided ideas about different ways to express a phrase. But with the improvement, it can now offer suggestions for how to reword entire sentences. The tech triggers a card that appears with tips on how to improve the flow, which excess words to cut out, and how to make it easier to read.

If the card does not appear, that means the sentence structure is probably pretty sound, though it doesn’t mean it’s necessarily mistake free. (Although, it’s likely in good order, as the tool “…is powered by cutting-edge, neural-network, machine learning models, which are trained on millions of sentences.” This isn’t to say the technology itself is perfect, Microsoft states it is seeking user feedback to help improve the system.

Right now, it’s only available in English to Microsoft 365 or Office 365 subscribers, along with the web-based version of Word. Microsoft writes in a blog post:

“At the 2019 Microsoft Build conference we announced the feature Rewrite suggestions, which focuses on phrasal suggestions. We are now introducing an update to this feature, which provides sentence-level writing suggestions.”
