It’s Happened Again, Almost 773 Million Email Addresses and 21 Million Passwords were Leaked in Data Flub

A massive email and password leak of almost 773 million address and 21 million pass codes make up the largest ever data breach…

A whopping 773 million email addresses and some 21 million passwords have been exposed by hackers.

Nearly 773 Email Addresses and 21 Million Passwords Exposed in Massive Data Leak

Security professional Troy Hunt reports the large data collection comes from a variety of sources:

“Let’s start with the raw numbers because that’s the headline, then I’ll drill down into where it’s from and what it’s composed of. Collection #1 is a set of email addresses and passwords totaling 2,692,818,238 rows. It’s made up of many different individual data breaches from literally thousands of different sources […]

In total, there are 1,160,253,228 unique combinations of email addresses and passwords. This is when treating the password as case sensitive but the email address as not case sensitive. This also includes some junk because hackers being hackers, they don’t always neatly format their data dumps into an easily consumable fashion […]

The unique email addresses totaled 772,904,991 [and] 21,222,975 unique passwords.”

Although many of the passwords were encrypted, they used weak special characters, which allowed them to be cracked. Hunt said multiple individuals reached out to him last week, pointing to a constellation of 12,000 files, with a total size of 87GB, containing nearly 2.7 billion records.

Fortunately, it’s easy to check to see who is and is not a part of the data breach. Simply go to the site Have I been Pwned to find out.
