New Facebook Safety Check features come to the social network, including Fundraisers, Community Help, personal notes, and crisis descriptions…
Today, Facebook announced four new updates to Safety Check to help users in times of crisis. The new updates include Fundraisers within Safety Check in the US, Community Help on desktop for all types of crisis, personal notes in Safety Check News Feed stories, and crisis reporting from NC4.
New Facebook Safety Check Updates Rolling Out
Fundraisers in Safety Check allow users to start a campaign, rolling out in the coming weeks in the United States. Donations for charitable causes and personal causes are coming to the feature.
Facebook released Community Help earlier this year, but only for mobile on Android and iOS. Now, the company is bringing this feature to desktop, in response to demand.
Facebook states it understands that in times of crisis, people share additional information to reassure others and provide additional context to the situation. To make this easier, users can now create personal notes to inform others about what’s happening, right inside the Safety Check tool. Notes will appear in the News Feed story, automatically generated when users mark themselves safe.
Another update to Safety Check are crisis descriptions. Through NC4, a third-party crisis reporting organization, people will receive more context about what’s going on.
“Safety Check has been activated more than 600 times in two years and has notified people that their families and friends are safe more than a billion times. Keeping the community safe means everything to us at Facebook and we hope that these updates to Safety Check continue to do just that,” Naomi Gleit, VP Social Good, writes.
