Instagram Introduces a New AI Filter that Spots Bully Language before it’s Posted

Instagram is stepping-up its anti-bullying campaign with a new AI program that helps to spot offensive language before it’s posted online…

It’s no secret that people misuse social media to engage in inappropriate behavior. That includes such despicable actions as online bullying — something that’s a real danger to tweens and teens in-particular.

Popular Facebook social media subsidiary Instagram is aware of the problem and is continuing its campaign to fight cyber-bullying.

New Instagram AI Program Seeks to Prevent Online Bullying

Instagram is slowly introducing a new AI program that helps to stop bullying by identifying such posts even before they are published.

If someone attempts to post offensive language, the Instagram algorithms match it up against previously reported posts. This would theoretically prevent bullies from harassing others by heeding the warning.

Instagram says the anti-bullying system is already live in “select countries” and should roll out to other markets in the “coming months.” The company posted the following on its official Info Center site:

“As part of our long-term commitment to lead the fight against online bullying, we’ve developed and tested AI that can recognize different forms of bullying on Instagram. Earlier this year, we launched a feature that notifies people when their comments may be considered offensive before they’re posted. Results have been promising, and we’ve found that these types of nudges can encourage people to reconsider their words when given a chance.”
