A new Instagram hashtag follow feature launches today, giving users a different way to discover and interact with interesting content…
In mid November, Instagram began testing a new hashtag follow option. Now, it’s in full release. “Today we’re introducing the ability to follow hashtags, giving you new ways to discover photos, videos and people on Instagram. Now it’s even easier to stay connected with the interests, hobbies, passions and communities you care about, the company explains.
New Instagram Hashtag Follow Option Rolls Out
With this change, Instagram will surely need to police and filter content to prevent objectionable material and spam from running rampant. However, the feature does hold the promise of allowing users to take deep dives into things that interest them.
Rival Twitter sports a similar feature called Moments. Moments works by following certain posts through a “Follow” button. Moments places new updates right inside the timeline.
In the future, the option could easily be used by brands. Businesses might see benefit in displaying more interstitial ads. However, Instagram states it’s not allowing that use at this time. To follow a hashtag, users simply need to search for a topic. The network will serve up relevant content. And, users can then opt to follow hashtags. Thereafter, users will see the top stories with those hashtags in their Feed.
