Instagram just introduced a new feature to help its users recover from hacked accounts. Appropriately called “Security Checkup,” the tool will prompt victims to check their recent login activity, review profile information, and update contact information to help recover their accounts. The company says that will allow users in some countries to verify their identity with their WhatsApp number, but this won’t roll out for a few weeks. The Facebook subsidiary states that it’s making the tool available because it’s experienced an increase in malicious activity, such as phishing and other nefarious means. Instagram writes in a blog post

“Security Checkup will guide people, whose accounts may have been hacked, through the steps needed to secure them. This includes checking login activity, reviewing profile information, confirming the accounts that share login information and updating account recovery contact information such as phone number or email.”
