Instagram Suggested Posts that Automatically Appear at the End of Users' Feeds

Instagram has Found a New Way to Keep Users Scrolling Endlessly (and Make more Ad Money, of Course)

Instagram suggested posts are a new way to keep people on the photo and video sharing platform for much longer periods of time…

It appears that Instagram has discovered a new way to keep people scrolling indefinitely. The popular Facebook social subsidiary is quietly introducing a new feature called “suggested posts.” It automatically delivers new content once users have come to the end of their feeds. That’s right, digital wellbeing be damned. After someone spends way too much time exhausting their feed, Instagram will serve up even more.

The move comes as rival TikTok, which has gained such immense popularity, continues to improve its algorithm that more accurately predicts what users prefer to watch. In order to make suggested posts actually useful, Instagram will include ads with its automatic recommendations. So, it’s monetizing the feature, naturally.

Robby Stein, Instagram’s director of product, says that it’s in response to users’ behavior of seeking out more content after reaching the end of their feeds. Instagram writes on a help page:

“When scrolling through Feed, you may see Suggested Posts after you’ve seen all the most recent posts from accounts you follow. These suggestions are based on posts from accounts like the ones you follow and posts similar to the ones you like or save.”
