Pinterest is rolling out a new search tool, dubbed “Lens,” for its mobile iOS and Android users. Currently, the visual discovery tool is in beta testing. Lens allows users to incorporate their devices’ cameras into searches. It works by simply launching the Pinterest mobile app and tapping a camera icon.

“Pinterest is built for open-minded discovery. Just like when you’re out window-shopping. You see something that intrigues you, and you go inside. That’s how finding ideas on Pinterest should feel. And that’s exactly what we’re launching today, chief product officer, Evan Sharp wrote on the company’s official blog.

After snapping a photo of an object, Lens delivers search results which display the subject in already finished projects. For example, searching a picture of a custom wall clock will return similar ideas or a pair of shoes.

“At Pinterest, we’ve developed new experimental technology that, for the first time ever, is capable of seeing the world the way you do. Now there’s a way to discover ideas without having to find the right words to describe them first,” Sharp explains.

Presently, the feature works best with home decor ideas, the social network states. Additionally, it works well for clothing and food. As more users search through Lens, the more improvements Pinterest will make.

Pinterest recently introduced search ads, as well as new retargeting options for advertisers. The pinboard social network has 150 million users, with over 75 billion shared ideas.
