Twitter just launched a new mobile progressive web app, Twitter Lite, developed with the help of search giant Google. It’s a faster version of the microblog, focused primarily on emerging markets with spotty internet connections. The Twitter Lite progressive web app takes up less than one megabyte of space and sports a data-saving feature.

The social network claims the PWA loads in under five seconds to reach interactivity on most 3G devices. Twitter also states it saves up to 70 percent on data use, while loading 30 percent quicker.

Additionally, the new Twitter PWA features, “Tweets, Direct Messages, trends, profiles, media uploads, notifications, and more.” Moreover, additional features are available to Android devices, like push notifications. Android users can add a shortcut to their home screen, where it will appear in the app drawer, functioning just like a native app.

The Twitter Lite PWA comes with offline support, so internet connection interruptions aren’t a problem. The PWA likewise contains other features for Google Chrome, as well as other browsers.

The company states it’s working diligently to bring additional updates to the progressive web app worldwide. “No matter where you are in the world, we want to make Twitter the best way for you to get real-time updates on news, sports, entertainment, politics, and other topics that matter most to you.”

The new Twitter Lite PWA is available at mobile.twitter.com. The company recently introduced DM APIs location sharing tools, currently in beta testing.
