PlayStation Vue shutting down

Sony to Shut Down its Live TV Service, PlayStation Vue on January 30th 2020

Sony has announced it will sunset its live television service, PlayStation Vue, at the end of January next year due to a few key reasons…

There have been persistent rumors Sony would abandon its PlayStation Vue platform. And now, it seems there’s more than a modicum of truth to them. While it won’t sell off the business, as thought, it will shutter the pay TV service on January 30th of next year.

Sony explains it is sun-setting the product because of an industry that was “slower to change than expected.” Plus, the field is merely too unworkable, due to “expensive content and network deals.”

What’s odd is the timing. Sony just struck a deal with Disney. Ostensibly, it would have kept those channels on Vue for years to come.

But, industry trends and nuances are a harsh reality all players in the space must deal with. Sony wrote on the PlayStation blog:

“…we are announcing that we will shut down the PlayStation Vue service on January 30, 2020. Unfortunately, the highly competitive Pay TV industry, with expensive content and network deals, has been slower to change than we expected. Because of this, we have decided to remain focused on our core gaming business.”
