Malware resides secretly on literally millions of Windows PCs and most targeted consumers don’t even know they’ve already become victims…
Right now, there are approximately 1.5 billion Windows users across the planet. (Although, that number isn’t necessarily accurate. But, there are more machines running the Microsoft operating system than any other.) What’s truly amazing, or rather alarming, is that millions of these devices are infected with malware of some sort. Moreover, most PC owners aren’t even aware they are victims…yet.
Security Experts Reveal Millions of Windows PCs are Infected with Malware and Most Victims don’t Know It
Malware is a serious concern. For instance, in 2004, Mydoom malware infected millions of machines around the globe. That one virus caused a whopping $52.2 billion in damages altogether. And, some people don’t realize they too are victims, even to this day. Last year, 92 million PCs were hit with malware, along with another 22 million business computers.
While that’s a startling figure, it’s actually less than the number of victimized devices in 2019. Even Mac owners aren’t immune — though most of them believe they’re completely safe. Last year saw a 31% increase in business attacks, with 5.2 million detections. Consumers bore the brunt of malware attempts, with 70 million detections. However, this doesn’t tell the full story.
Hackers were still quite busy last year. In fact, 2020 saw a huge variation in what attackers used. Adware accounted for over 32 million infections, Trojans another 23 million, and HackTools an additional 15 million. Malware like backdoors, data stealers, and cryptocurrency stealers increased in use by 61% while still only representing 1.5% of all attacks. So, it’s always a good idea to run antivirus tools and keep vigilant.
