Security Firm Identifies 21 Android Adware Apps on the Google Play Store

Security firm Avast first revealed its findings last week. The malicious apps were found to heavily bombard unsuspecting users with intrusive ads to run up super-sized phone bills in the process. The adware-laden apps have already been downloaded almost eight million times in total. Avast explains the apps utilize the HiddenAds malware family, which conceals a harmful Trojan posing as a legitimate application.

Many of the reviews of these apps show that users saw ads for these apps on social media sites, like TikTok, as well as on YouTube. Unfortunately, this is an increasingly new and popular tactic among threat actors to victimize as many people as possible. A detailed list of the adware apps can be found here.
