TikTok’s parent corporation, ByteDance, will release its own search engine to compete with Baidu, the market leader in China…
TikTok Parent Company ByteDance Launching its Own Search Engine
ByteDance already owns a news aggregator and the new search engine is basically an extension of that property.
Toutiao Search works by accessing information from the web, along with other properties owned by the company.
Since it’s in China, though, search results are censored, something Google couldn’t manage well when it was available in the country.
Its target audience is primarily in the East, meaning it won’t go up against Google. However, it will have to compete with Baidu, which currently claims a market share of 76 percent. (By comparison, Baidu only has a 1.21 percent market share worldwide.)
The new search engine is backed by the same company which acquired Musical.ly in 2017, which it remade into TikTok, the most downloaded social media app, outpacing Instagram last year in user installs.
