Twitter Active Users, Numbers for Q1 Show Strong Results

In its Q1 report, Twitter shows its efforts paying off. The microblog’s focus on different features and improvements, such as live-streaming, machine learning adoption, and more, resulted in 9 million new monthly active users or MAUs.

Since Q1 2016, the number of Twitter monthly active users have increased from 310 million to 328 million or by 6 percent, in a year-over-year comparison, worldwide. In the United States alone, the number of Twitter monthly active users have grown from 65 million to 70 million, as depicted in the chart below:

The number of Twitter daily active users on the platform have increased by 14 percent in a year-over-year comparison, from Q1 2016 to Q1 2017. By comparison, though, Facebook grew by 72 million MAUs in its last quarterly report, increasing to 1.86 billion globally.

Additionally, Twitter shares rose by 12 percent, following the earnings announcement. Twitter credits its gains due to its refined focus on its core use as “the best and fastest place to see what’s happening in the world.”

In January, Twitter introduced its Explore tab, which replaced Moments. Approximately 40 percent of daily active users visit this tab on average and 60 percent return to the same tab the following day.

Twitter live-streamed over 800 hours in Q1, covering more than 450 events and reaching 45 million unique viewers, an increase of 31 percent, compared to Q4 2016. The company also generated $548 million in Q1, but this represents a decrease of 8 percent, year-over-year. Total advertising fell by 11 percent year-over-year, however, data licensing rose.
