Twitter Live-Streaming Sports Deal Inked

A new Twitter live-streaming sports deal will cover European broadcaster Sky News U.K. soccer clubs’ “Deadline Day” this afternoon for three hours…

Social media microblog Twitter just landed a live-streaming deal, covering United Kingdom soccer “Deadline Day.” In a move to challenge rivals Snapchat, Facebook, and Instagram, Twitter will partner with the Sky Sports newsroom at 12 p.m. London time to 1 p.m., 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., and the final hour from 10 p.m. to 11 p.m. Fans who wish to see the action can visit DeadlineDay.Twitter.com.

Twitter Live-Streaming Sports Deal Finalized

During the Deadline Day broadcast, visitors will see live video accompanied by a stream of tweets. “We are thrilled to collaborate with Sky Sports to give fans everywhere another way to watch and discuss the day’s top rumors and deals as they unfold live, all on Twitter,” Anthony Noto, COO of Twitter, wrote in a press release.

Live video is currently the largest battleground for social media platforms attempting to boost user engagement and increase active users. Twitter is struggling with its own user base. Just last month, Chief Executive Jack Dorsey tweeted with users for over six hours, asking what features they most want. Previously the company’s stock plunged in early 2015 as bidders backed away.

Twitter signed an exclusive partner deal to livestream Thursday night NFL games. The debut football game streamed on the social network reached 2.1 million viewers.
