Verizon is about to sell off Tumblr to the parent company of WordPress, Automattic, for an undisclosed amount of money…
Verizon Selling Tumblr to WordPress Parent Company Automattic
The reason for the persistent rumors were due to a big child pornography scandal.
Previously, Yahoo purchased the once popular site for over $1 billion in 2013. It was packaged together when Verizon acquired Yahoo in 2017. Thereafter, Tumblr became part of the fleeting Oath business.
The ban of NSFW content sharply drove down traffic and isolated a good portion of the site’s user base.
The platform hit its lowest ever new mobile user count in Q4 2013. Plus, it was down approximately 40 percent in year-over-year numbers from Q1 2018, according to data from SensorTower.
Although the details of the deal aren’t being made public, Automattic chief Matt Mullenweg told the Wall Street Journal his company will take on 200 employees. And, Mullenweg also stated it’s Automattic’s largest acquisition in terms of cost and staff.
Tumblr remains big, with 475.1 million blogs but this is much smaller than it was in its best days.
