Waze has expanded a winter road conditions tool, already available in over 185 countries, to the US, starting with a partnership with the Virginia DOT…
Released in 2006 and formerly known as FreeMap Israel, Waze is a GPS navigation software app owned by Google since 2013. It’s very popular and Google has been incrementally integrating some of its key features into Google Maps. In fact, less than two months ago, Google incorporated Assistant functionality into the crowd-sourcing app.
Now, the parent company is expanding another helpful feature, previously available in more than 185 countries, to the United States — winter road condition reports.
Waze Snow Warnings for Unplowed Roads and other Winter Conditions Debut
The new Waze real-time winter road condition feature is being made possible with the help of the Virginia Department of Transportation. It includes such information as “Snow Warnings,” for unplowed streets, along with real-time snow conditions, and more.
This should allow users to report such hazards as black ice or other dangerous conditions due to ice, sleet, freezing rain, and more.
Waze users can report these and other road conditions by going to Hazards > Weather. It’s currently available on Android, as well as iOS.
The state of Virginia says it plans to use reported information to help it plan for the 2020 – 2021 winter season.
